The path to a driver's license

  • 1. First Aid Course (NHK)

The first aid course is the first step towards obtaining a learner's permit. It can be completed from the age of 16 and is valid for 6 years.

  • 2. Learner's permit application

After successfully completing the first aid course, you will need the application form for a learner's permit. You can download this form directly here for the Canton of Zurich, print it out, fill it in with your personal details, and attach a valid passport photo.

  • 3. Eye test

For the eye test, bring your printed and completed learner's permit application. The ophthalmologist or optician will enter the results of your eye test on it and confirm them. If you already have a valid eye test certificate, you can also include this certificate with your learner's permit application. The eye test certificate is valid for two years.

  • 4. Confirmation of your identity

To confirm your identity, you must go to the local council office or the road traffic office to have it personally verified on your learner's permit application. Bring your identity card/passport!

I recommend you go directly to the road traffic office; then you can submit your learner's permit application directly and save time!

  • 5. Submitting the learner's permit application

You can submit your learner's permit application to the road traffic office one month before your 16th birthday (Cat. A1) or your 17th birthday (Cat. B).

Don't forget your passport photo now!

As mentioned in point 4, you can complete this step together with the "confirmation of your identity" – hence my recommendation to do steps 4 & 5 directly at the road traffic office.

  • 6. Theory test

After submitting your learner's permit application, you will receive your login details to register for the theory test after the best possible preparation.

There is a lot of learning software available: Certainly, one good preparation for learning and exam simulation is...

Before the exam, you are welcome to contact me and arrange an appointment to address any questions or uncertainties.

Your learner's permit will be issued to you after you pass the theory test and sent to your home. The learner's permit is valid for two years. After this period, you can apply for a second learner's permit.

  • 7. Practical driving training

With a valid learner's permit, practical driving training can begin.

For private learning drives, the accompanying person must be at least 23 years old and possess the definitive driving licence of the corresponding category.

  • 8. Traffic Awareness Lesson (VKU)

The VKU consists of 4 parts. Part 1 must be attended first in order for attendance at the other 3 parts to be confirmed.

Part 1: Hazard Awareness/Safety Awareness and Sensory Organs (must be attended first)

Part 2: Partner knowledge and street knowledge

Part 3: Vehicle condition, vehicle dynamics and traffic flow theory

Part 4: Driving ability, tactical rules and environmental awareness

  • 9. Practical driving test

After completing the traffic theory course and once you are ready for the practical driving test, I can register you for the practical driving test (provided you have completed the legally required 12-month learning period). After passing the driving test, you will receive a probationary driving license.

  • 10. 2-phase training WAB

The mandatory advanced training has been reduced from two (2) days to one (1) day and must be completed within the first year after passing the driving test. It includes practical exercises and experiencing driving situations under realistic conditions.
